An Opening Date Blooms for The Huntingtons Rose Garden Tea Room

That's when a large-scale renovation began, a sizable updating that would give the tea room a new outdoor pavilion next to the lovely Shakespeare Garden and an overall "improvement in functionality." That building, which turned 100 in 2011, was the billiards room and bowling alley of Henry E. Huntington, the founder of the grand estate. “Everything we intended to be meaningful about a history that we want to share, but with lots of people,” Lawrence said of a three-part tea room that now seats 164. Museum leadership took advantage of the time to complete an $11.2 million, 18-month renovation which began in late 2021 and was displayed at a media preview Monday. The cozy, colorful corner spot takes up residence in the former Caffe Vita space, directly across the street from the historic Vista Theater.

Additionally, a ceremonial teahouse is on site to demonstrate what traditional tea ceremonies are like, and a bonsai collection is housed in the Zen Court to aid in relaxation. The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens will soon renovate and expand its historic Rose Garden Tea Room, creating a new outdoor dining space and refreshing the aging entrance with a $7.5 million project, according to a Thursday news release, Jan. 21. In 1928, a year after Henry Huntington’s death (Arabella died in 1924), The Huntington opened to the public, and the billiard room and bowling alley were transformed into a “tearoom,” serving luncheon for visitors, staff, and researchers. A menu from 1940 lists options such as bread and butter with jam, toasted English muffins with marmalade, and lettuce-and-mayonnaise sandwiches. Food service for visitors was interrupted between 1943 and 1959 because the endeavor was losing money.

It was crucial that every element of the garden was restored with the utmost concern for authenticity, while improving accessibility and upgrading irrigation systems. The Yokoi shōya house was built around 1700 in Marugame, says Hori, and was the family’s private residence as well as a kind of community center for the village. The house sits higher than the farmland, so water collected from the roof and ponds all drains down to irrigate the farm land. As with any structure built over a hundred years ago, there is plenty of history within its walls. But Lawrence said construction workers unearthed a mystery as well — a bridge score pad and old decks of cards.

Sunflower Season Is Abloom at Hana Field (but Do Make Reservations)

As if timed to coincide perfectly with the warmer weather and springtime splendor, the Rose Garden Tea Room resumes afternoon tea service on Wednesday, May 24. The reopening follows a three-year closure and an extensive 18-month-long, $11.2 million restoration and renovation of the century-old building. There are various art galleries that house the art collections at the Huntington Library.

The Tea Room’s selection of savories and sweets served on tiered silver platters will change with the seasons and incorporate the garden’s bounty whenever possible. For the reopening, the scratch-made scones are served with marmalade made from fruit harvested from the 100-year-old groves outside the tea room’s doors. The chicken salad sandwich includes chives, tarragon, and parsley grown in the nearby herb garden.

On the western side of the building, “the room that opens out to the Herb Garden will also be renovated and made available for private rentals, in addition to being used for the Tea Room’s general service,” the release says. After the military shogunate system was overturned in the late 19th century, the house became the Yokois’ private residence and went through several renovations, according to Yokoi and her husband, Akira. The couple moved to California in the late 1960s, says Hori, where Akira worked as an executive for Matsushita Panasonic, the parent company of Panasonic.

Lawrence said that when the construction team initially opened up the main dining room walls, they found a bridge score pad and playing cards inside. Caramelized Pear A fruity and flavorful blend with notes of honey, caramel, and freshly baked pear. Pacific Coast Mint This refreshing organic blend of spearmint and peppermint is harvested from the coasts of Oregon and California. Huntington Rose Blend Inspired by Arabella Huntington’s most beloved flowers, this blend’s floral essence and smooth finish delight the senses.

Hunt also designed Henry and wife Arabella Huntington’s residence (now the Huntington Art Gallery), the Library building, and the Huntingtons’ garage (now the MaryLou and George Boone Gallery). The Tea Room closed in March 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and then it underwent a major 18-month renovation. Traditional tea service has been ramped up with the opening of the Rose Garden Tea Room. The staff partnered with L.A.-based tea importer Art of Tea to curate a list of tea that includes Earl Grey Crème, Green Pomegranate, French Lemon Ginger and Summer Peach.

The Tea Room has been closed to the public since March 2020, first because of the COVID-19 pandemic and then for the renovations. The most notable addition is a 320-square-foot ceremonial teahouse and accompanying tea garden. The teahouse, named Seifu-an or “Arbor of Pure Breeze,” was built in Kyoto in 1964 and donated to the Huntington by a California Buddhist temple in 2010.

Rainy days can be true gifts for cultivated gardens, those lush expanses where a variety of roses hold colorful court. One of Southern California’s most venerable and iconic dining experiences has returned.

After a yearlong $6.8 million renovation, the Huntington Library in San Marino, California, has reopened its esteemed nine-acre Japanese garden to visitors. The plantings and pathways have been meticulously restored, and a new ceremonial teahouse has been added. While the Huntington’s art museums are closed right now, the gardens are still open for visitors.

Inspired by the Pacific Electric Railway and showcasing travel posters from The Huntington’s collections, Red Car coffee shop offers espresso, tea, pastries, ice cream, snacks, and grab-and-go fare. Pick up a warm croissant breakfast sandwich, muffin, or scone to go if you’re in a hurry, or take your time and enjoy a sandwich or salad for lunch seated at the banquette, booth, or bar area. Dark Chocolate Peppermint This pu-erh tea is a sweet, aromatic blend combining notes of cooling mint with the taste of smooth, decadent chocolate in a bold infusion. Butterscotch A golden-hued white tea infusion with sweet, creamy, and spicy notes.

There are also plenty of colorful flowers, unique shaped plants and flora that attracts hummingbirds. A portion of The Huntington’s American art collection is contextualized with contributions from contemporary artists in “Borderlands,” a new permanent collections installation that explores a more expansive view of American art history. Welcome guests with lakeside views on the teahouse terrace or invite them to an intimate gathering within the private Plantain Courtyard nestled between the Chinese Garden’s glass tea house and decorated with verdant plantain trees. James Folsom, director of the Huntington’s Botanical Gardens, recruited architects, artisans, and horticulturists from around the U.S. and Japan to restore the landscape. “The greatest challenge was resolving the issues of our own history and future—how to preserve Henry Huntington’s imprint without constraining more than necessary our aesthetic and programmatic goals,” he explains.

Elements of this five-room house were created in Japan and shipped to Pasadena around 1904 for a commercial garden. Acquired by Henry E. Huntington in 1911, the structure is composed of several Japanese woods, with paneled doors to the outside that can be left open or closed to allow inhabitants to enjoy the gardens around them. During a 2011 renovation, original architectural features were discovered, such as the distinctive curves of the roof line and original plaster and wood finishes. Restored, today the structure is considered one of the best examples of early twentieth-century Japanese architecture in the United States. Starting May 24, diners will once again be able to enjoy high tea in glassy, comfortable new digs, adjacent to rows of blooming roses and complete with housemade scones or smoked salmon with dill cream cheese and caviar.

Keep in mind, some ships might be more desirable than others, and cruises leaving at peak times of the year are more money regardless of the departure point. As you can see, there are advantages to cruising from San Francisco. However, if you are looking for more ship selection, you should consider Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC as other departure points.

Don’t wait any longer, riding the world's longest zip line in Alaska will be an experience you'll never forget while on your next Alaskan mountain adventure. After traveling somewhere new, you want to bring something back with you to remember all of your fun adventures. The sheer size of Alaska lends itself to a wide variety of terrain and travel experiences. This diversity means you need to be prepared for a lot of change while traveling. Head to Kenai Fjords National Park in Seward for a whale watching tour.

This cruise goes to Endicott Arm for Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier, College Fjord, Glacier Bay National Park. From the sweeping mountains of Juneau to the fish-bearing seas of Ketchikan, discover our Alaska cruise ports and set sail into the adventures that await you. When planning a trip to Alaska, many travelers wonder if it's better to explore the state by land or by sea. Due to the greater distance to reach Alaska from San Francisco, cruises are longer than those from Seattle or Vancouver. With the extra sea days, cruisers should expect day itineraries.

Information deemed reliable but not guaranteed -- please confirm details at time of booking. Stateroom photos are for sample purposes only -- actual design and layout may vary. Like everything else in Alaska, the Great Land’s national parks far exceed expectations. Read about Glacier Bay’s seven tidewater glaciers, Denali’s 6-million acres of undisturbed wilderness, Kenai Fjords' astonishing Exit Glacier and other national parks. Visit San Francisco, Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay, Victoria, San Francisco.

At first glance many mistake Victoria for an English coastal city or northern European town. Full of greenery, pubs and Victorian architecture, it's difficult to believe that this was a tent city full of rough and tumble miners just 150 years ago. On a cruise to Alaska, explore the Butchart Gardens, tour the pub scene and taste some of the local brews or sail the bay for a whale-watching adventure. Icy Strait Point is a unique and remote destination in Alaska that offers visitors the chance to experience the authentic culture and natural beauty of the region.

Sail 500 miles deeper into the Gulf of Alaska and Prince William Sound on our back-to-back Voyage of the Glaciers Alaska cruise. Spend 14 days roundtrip from Vancouver, B.C., stopping in historic port cities like Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. Enjoy three glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary — including Glacier Bay National Park, Hubbard Glacier and College Fjord. All cruises have an itinerary including Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway. Most other cruises have an itinerary with either Juneau OR Skagway, not both.

Enjoy two glacier-viewing experiences on every itinerary — including Glacier Bay National Park, and Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord. Most cruise ports have all day in port so you will have time to do something in the morning, go back to the ship for lunch, and then go back out to do something in the afternoon! There is a cruise in which Ketchikan leaves earlier in the day, so be sure to look out for that. In September 2025, the Carnival Legend does a 15-day cruise to Hawaii from San Francisco round trip, which follows a 10-day Alaska cruise. So you can make it an epic 25-day cruise from San Francisco to Alaska and Hawaii! (You’ll need to like sea days, though!) Similarly, you would book these cruises separately and be doing back-to-back cruises.

Find the comforts of home along with the luxuries you deserve on board any of our ships. Visit Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and Muir Woods National Monument. In the birthplace of blue jeans, shop boutiques on Market Street, or find the perfect souvenir at Pier 39. Then savor Italian seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf, and try the city’s signature dish — clam chowder in a bread bowl. Or spend time in Sonoma or Napa sipping locally grown wines before your cruise from San Francisco. The Panama Canal is a true engineering wonder, but even more spectacles lie ahead when you cruise from San Francisco aboard the #1 cruise line in the Canal.

Or head North to Astoria to experience the iconic beauty of the Pacific Northwest while sampling ales at local breweries. Choose from a four-day cruise from San Francisco to Vancouver or a five-day voyage through the Golden State. For a taste of fun, flavor and fiesta, sail to Mexico with Princess.
